Many cultures have a gnome in their folklore, especially the European countries, as this appears to be the part of the world where gnomes have the highest population average historically. Though gnomes are showing up in new record highs in the North American countries. It appears they are attracted by the wide open spaces and promise of good fortune.
Most of the earliest folklore involving gnomes has come out of Sweden. In Swedish the gnome is called, ‘Tomte’ and there was a widespread belief in gnomes in the 11th century when Christianity started to get a foothold in the country. Naturally gnome belief fell off in the ensuing centuries even though the idea of gnomes remained popular, it wasn’t until recently that gnomes started to be believed in again.
There is evidence of gnome belief in the countries of Austria and Germany dating back to the mid 1700’s. Sculptures of garden gnomes have been found in the two countries dating back to this era. This may also be the earliest evidence of the ‘Garden Gnome,’ this is a relatively new kind of gnome that developed in response to the gardens and lawns that humans take so much pride in.
The Garden Gnome began to make appearances in England during the Victorian era . As a result Victorians created lavishly decorated sculptures of these gnomes, painted in the earthy colors that gnomes are often seen wearing.
The garden gnomes cap is a conspicuous item of clothing. Despite their tendency to wear earthy colors they maintain this bright red cap as a vital part of their daily gear and are nearly never seen without it.
Practically the cap is thought to serve as protection from above, whether it be from an animal or human foot, falling objects or simply a bright red beacon to warn off a hungry bird. Some believe it is precisely this gaudy object that helps to make the garden gnome and other gnome races invisible to the adult human. How this theory works out is a mystery, but perhaps it has to do with irony or opposites.
Again the male gnome will almost never be seen without his red cap. The few exceptions are when he is still very young and Hasn't received one, supposedly when he is in bed, when he is repairing the cap and in some cases a gnome will give up a cap to a threatening cat in order to escape.
The red cap is handmade to fit it’ owners head perfectly and given to the male gnome when he is still young. From then on (if there are no cats or accidents) the gnome will keep this cap until his death.

Gnomes Sightings
The gnome is a difficult creature to find. Indeed there have been far and few sightings of many of the gnome races in the world and some have never been seen at all, only heard of in human folklore. By far the most common sighting of a gnome is that of the garden gnome. The garden gnome is one of the more mischievous and therefore outgoing gnomes. These gnomes find the sculptures of garden gnomes that humans place in their gardens and lawns to be highly amusing and they will often hang out in the lawns of people who own such décor.
