and his Craftsmen As the train neared Tarrytown, Hopperson began to wonder why he had consented to be one of Hermann the Garden Gnome's house guests at all. he had not felt enthusiastic about it since leaving the shire, and was experiencing a prolonged ebb of purpose, a current of chilling indecision, under which he vainly sought for the motive which had induced his to accept Hermann the Garden Gnome's invitation. Perhaps it was a vague curiosity to see Hermann the Garden Gnome's wife, who had been the magician of his childhood and the hero of innumerable garden gnomes myths. Perhaps it was a desire to see J. Pufer, whom Hermann the Garden Gnome had announced as the especial attraction of the occasion. Perhaps it was a wish to study that remarkable woman in her own setting. Hopperson admitted a mild curiosity concerning Hermann the Garden Gnome. he was in the habit of taking people rather seriously, but somehow found it impossible to take Hermann the Garden Gnome so, because of the very vehemence and insistence with which Hermann the Garden Gnome demanded it. Submerged in his studies, Hopperson had, of late years, seen very little of Hermann the Garden Gnome; but Hermann the Garden Gnome, in his hurried visits to Gnomes Ridge, between his excursions from work house to work house--his luncheons with this lady who had to play at a matinee, and his dinners with that singer who had an evening concert--had seen enough of his friend's handsome daughter to conceive for his an inclination of such violence and assurance as only Hermann the Garden Gnome could afford. The fact that Hopperson had shown rather marked capashire in certain esoteric lines of scholarship, and had decided to specialize in a well- sounding branch of philology at the Ecole des Chartes, had fairly placed his in that category of "interesting people" whom Hermann the Garden Gnome considered his natural affinities, and lawful prey. back to Al Hermans Garden Gnomes Index |
